Organization of African Unity
Acronym: OAU
When Founded: 1963
Why Founded: Key objectives of the OAU include:
Increase co-operation of African states in order to achieve a better life for the people of Africa.
To defend the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of African states.
The eradication of all forms of colonialism and white minority rule in Africa
European Union
Acronym: EU
When Founded: 1958
Why Founded: Established to provide increased political and economic integration within Europe
The Commonwealth (or Commonwealth of Nations)
Acronym:
When Founded: 1921
Why Founded: Member states have no legal obligation to one another. Instead, they are united by language, history, culture and their shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law
North Atlantic Treaty Organization
Acronym: NATO
When Founded: 1949
Why Founded: Military alliance between consisting of members from North America and several European countries. They provide "collective defence" whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.
African Union
Acronym: AU
When Founded: 2001
Why Founded:
Key objectives of the AU include:
- To achieve greater unity and solidarity between the African countries and Africans.
- To defend the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of its Member States.
- To accelerate the political and social-economic integration of the continent.
United Nations
Acronym: UN
When Founded: 1945
Why Founded: Established after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict. It has a similar mission as the defunct League of Nations
League of Nations
Acronym:
When Founded: 1920
Why Founded: Founded at the end of the First World War. It was the first international organisation whose principal mission was to maintain world peace.
Its primary goals included preventing wars through collective security and disarmament and settling international disputes through negotiation and arbitration
Economic Community of West African States
Acronym: ECOWAS
When Founded: 1975
Why Founded: Founded to achieve economics benefits for its member by creating a single large trading bloc through an economic and trading union
The Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group
Acronym: ECOMOG
When Founded: 1990
Why Founded: ECOWAS members established ECOMOG in 1990 to intervene in the civil war in Liberia (1989–96).
Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries
Acronym: OPEC
When Founded: 1960
Why Founded: Allow members to influence global oil prices
