    Good day all The concept of set theory is the most fundamental in mathematics often tested on JAMB and other exams. so lets take a quick look into this topics.

    Set theory - Any collection or well defined list of objects. The objects that make up a set are called its element or members.

    Set Representation - A set can be represented in three majors ways;

    (a) In a tabular form where its elements are listed and enclosed in brackets. e.g. A = {1, 3, 4}

    (b) Set builder form.e.g. B = { x:2≤ x ≤ 8}.

    (c) Pictorial method by the use of circles or squares.

    The Universal Set - All sets under consideration are assumed to be contained in one big and fixed set called universal set. it is denoted by Equality of Set - Consider two non - empty sets A and B. if every element of A is also an element of B and if every element of B is also an element of A.

    Then A = B

    Power Set -This is the number of subsets of a set and is denoted by P(A).The elements of a power set are subsets or sets themselves.

    The Cardinality of P(A) = 2c, where c = n(A), the cardinality of A.

    Difference Set or Relative Complement of a set - Let A and B be two sets. The difference of A and B or the relative difference of A with respect to B,denoted by A-B or A\B

    Can Anyone solve the solutions to the problem below;

    1. Let A = {x: 2<x < 9, x an integer}, B = {x: 2≤ x ≤ 5}, P = {x:3≤ x ≤ 10,x odd }, find A ∪(B∪P)

    2. Let = { 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10}, A ={ 1, 2 , 3, 4}, B ={3, 4,5,6,7}, C = { 4,5,6,7,8}. Find A-(B ∩C)

    3. Given two non -empty sets A and B, find (A-B)∩B, and -A

    4. If A = {Integer: 1 < x <15}, B = {x: x2 =16}, C = {x2 + x - 6 =0},find
    (i) n( A∪B∪C),
    (ii) the cardinality of n( A∪B∪C)

    5.If n( A∪B) =12, n(A∩B) = 7 and n(B) =9.Find n(A)

    **Note that this session begins from 3:00 - 4:00pm and it focus is on SET THEORY. Before the session begins, you can put down your questions on paper and then ask them when the session officially begins by 3:00pm.
