He was born in Zungeru, Niger State. His father was a clerk during the British administration. He studied at Hope Wad-dell Training Institute Calabar, Methodist Boys High School Lagos. After his secondary school, he picked up a clerk job in the then Nigeria treasury in Lagos, before moving to united state to pursue a career in political science. While at college, he took up part-time jobs, just to help him pay his tuition fees.He went on to hold two master degrees despite the hardship. He devise syllabus for Africa history, he was true definition of wazobian who after his secondary school was able to speak fluently the three major ethnic language in Nigeria. He mentored Ghana first president Kwame Nkrumah. Co-founder of National Council of Nigeria and Cameroon (NCNC) along side Herbert Macaulay in 1944. The first Nigeria president.
Courtesy of his numerous contributions to the nation, Africa and the world at large, places were named after him; like Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State. Nnamdi Azikiwe Press Center Ikoyi, Lagos. Nigeria five hundred naira currency note adorn his portrait. He received honorary degrees within and outside the country from different universities to mention but few, Howard University, Lincoln University, UNN, UNILAG, ABU, UI, the University of Liberia etc. He was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II as the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. He remain one of the Nigerian most respected statesman. He is the great Zik of Africa. He is Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe
